A group of young Filipino Calgarian artists turns history into rebellion through the creation of a radical graphic novel anthology series.

“AKLAS: The Making” is a window into the power of imagination and the reality that shapes it. “AKLAS: The Making” is a 29-minute documentary chronicling the journey of a group of young Filipino Calgarian creatives as they develop a sci-fi cyberpunk comic book rooted in history, resistance, and identity, inspired by real-world struggles.

Through their creative journey, they confront the weight of history, identity, and the challenges of bringing a vision to life.

“Ligaya”

96” x 60” Aerosol, Acrylic on wood

Ligaya is a deeply personal portrait I created in honor of my late mother. The piece is titled Ligaya, the Tagalog word for "joy," and it reflects the essence of the love and joy she brought into my life. The blue Baybayin script represents the words Ligaya, Gunita (which means "to remember"), and Busilak (meaning "pure").

“Maria Sinukuan” Print

Maria Sinukuan of Mt. Arayat embodies Luzon. Known as a guardian deity of the forest and a giver of abundance, she provides for the needs of the people. The scene captures the moment greedy men beg for mercy after demanding more than what they require, their fate hanging before transformation into swine, a cautionary tale against excess.

“Dalikmata” Print

From the Visayas emerges Dalikmata, Traditionally known as a goddess with many eyes who sees the unseen, she is reimagined here not with her countless eyes but with a headdress of CCTV cameras, which represents modern surveillance. This transformation points to the shift from spiritual omniscience to technological control, where vision becomes a tool of both protection and intrusion.
